Renewable DieselFueling your diesel-powered vehicles, equipment, and generators doesn’t have to be at odds with reducing your greenhouse gas emissions. Alternatives like renewable/HVO diesel have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. Hart Fueling is proud to supply renewable diesel fuel to businesses wanting to lower their carbon footprint while maintaining the same fuel performance and efficiency that gets the job done.

What is HVO/Renewable Diesel Fuel?

Renewable diesel — also known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) diesel, green diesel, R99, and R100 — is a clean-burning, sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based diesel fuel. It is derived from renewable sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste oils and is produced through a process called hydrotreating. This process removes impurities and harmful emissions, resulting in a high-quality, low-carbon fuel that is compatible with diesel engines.

HVO diesel is chemically very similar to petroleum-based diesel, making it a true drop-in replacement. Renewable diesel is not the same as biodiesel which is manufactured differently, has a lower energy content, and is not as clean-burning as renewable diesel.

There are two main types of renewable diesel available — R99 diesel (99% HVO diesel, 1% petroleum diesel) and R100 diesel (100% HVO diesel). Hart Fueling offers delivery for both types depending on your preferences.

Use Renewable Diesel with No Modifications to Diesel Engines

Because HVO diesel shares similar chemical properties with traditional diesel, it can be used as a full replacement without any modifications to the engines or components of your equipment. Compared to other sustainable fuel alternatives like biodiesel, it won’t cause issues like engine clogging, fuel filter plugging, or storage tank corrosion. It also offers the same performance and efficiency as regular diesel, making for a convenient and cost-effective transition.

If you still have a supply of standard Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) on hand or aren’t ready to make a full transition, it can be blended with HVO diesel without issue so no fuel goes to waste.

Benefits of Switching to HVO Diesel

There are many reasons businesses are making the switch to renewable diesel. Not only does it reduce CO2 emissions by up to 75% compared to traditional diesel, but it also improves air quality by reducing harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide. This is a major benefit, not only to the environment, but also to job site workers who are using diesel-powered vehicles and equipment on a daily basis.

Additionally, renewable diesel has a higher cetane number, which means better engine performance, improved fuel economy, and reduced maintenance costs. The stability of the fuel is indefinite and it has excellent cold weather performance down to 4 degrees. It is also compliant with OEM standards and presents no risk to engine warranties.
