Try our DEF Usage Calculator

DEF burn rates vary from 2% to 4% of your diesel fuel consumption, depending on the type of engine and the conditions. A good rule of thumb is to order 1 gallon of DEF for every 33 gallons of diesel.

Use the calculator below to enter your average diesel fuel consumption per month over the past 12 months, and it will provide the number of gallons of DEF required and the type of delivery that will best suit your consumption needs.

Factors to Consider

Jugs are sometimes preferable when usage is spread out among many different engines.  Jugs are also helpful for smaller fill-ups, even when ordering larger quantities.

DEF has a shelf life of 1-2 years and can degrade faster when stored in temperatures above 86 degrees or below freezing. While ordering in bulk reduces costs, you don’t want to store more than 6 months’ supply at a time to prevent waste.

DEF totes and on-site fuel tanks require storage space that is accessible from vehicles in need of DEF.

Remote DEF Tank & Tote Monitoring

Hart can set up remote monitoring for on-site DEF tanks and DEF totes. Our monitoring systems work the same way on DEF totes and fuel tanks. By using the same system, you can set up your fuel and DEF storage tanks at the same time, and you’ll be able to track DEF usage alongside diesel and gasoline in the same app.
